Church

Church is Authoritative

Mt 16:18Jesus to build his church, not religion
Mt 16:18Jesus: gates of hell shall not prevail
Mt 18:17Jesus: Go to the Church for answersThe Church has the final word, not the bible. The Church has the authority to decide contentious issues. So much so, that the one who does not listen to the Church is to be treated as a heathen (i.e., a sinner outside the Church in need of conversion).

Protestants commonly use "church" in their translations (KJV, NKJV, 21C-KJV, NIV, NASB, LB, NLT, ASV, RSV, etc.) rendering this verse. A very few try to muddy the issue by suggesting the verse refers only to a local church assembly or congregation. This ignores the Unity of the Church and the Universality of the Church, in effect denying that the Church is the source of Truth.
Mt 18:18Jesus: church has power to set rules
Mt 23:2-3power of office, not officeholder
Mt 28:19-20Jesus tells the Apostles to act
Lk 10:16Jesus: apostles can speak for HimFor more on this topic, see: The Teaching Authority of the Church.
Jn 16:13Holy Spirit to guide into all truth
Jn 17:18Father => Jesus => apostles
Jn 20:21Father => Jesus => apostles
Jn 20:23power to forgive sin
AA 2:42doctrine, sacred rite, community
Ep 5:25-26Jesus loves the ChurchJesus loves the Church; so much so that he sacrificed himself for it (not scripture). Protestant bibles uniformly use "church" in this verse, including the KJV, NKJV, NIV, LB, NASB, RSV, etc.
1 Tm 3:15church is foundation of truth
He 13:17obey the church, watcher of souls
1 Cr 5:7excommunications
1 Tm 1:20excommunications
1 Cr 11:23-24power to offer sacrifice
Lk 5:3-4Peter's boat prefigures ChurchWhy is it mentioned that there were two ships; that one of them was Simon Peter's, that Christ went into that one, sat down in it, and sitting he taught out of that ship? No doubt, answer many of the ancient commentators, to show that the Church was figured by the bark (barque) of Peter, and that in it is the chair of Christ, a permanent authority, foreshadowed by the OT chair of Moses. Literally, the true word of God sits there.
AA 15:2Dispute taken to the ChurchEven the apostles take a dispute to the church, and importantly, accept its determination as authoritative.
AA 22:6-10God sends Saul to the ChurchGod does not, even on this extraordinary occasion, transgress his own church. Rather than telling Saul to study scripture further or to act unilaterally, God sends him to the ministers of the church, that healing (AA 9:18), the sacraments (AA 9:16) and sanction (AA 9:7) may be properly imparted through them. This observation is worthy the notice of the self-inspired of the present day, who pretend to receive their light direct from heaven. Nothing can be more opposite to the spirit of the gospel than such delusion. --Haydock
AA 15:24we gave no commandProblems with unauthorized (and problematic) preachings prompt church leaders to reassert their lawful authority.
AA 26:16Jesus acts thru ChurchDeclares that He will make Paul a "minister" (NB: has primary connotations of servant, manual laborer, assistant). This is done through the Church (initially in Damascus; Ananais is described as a "disciple" in AA 9:10 and administers the sacrament of Baptism) and later through the auspices of the broader Church.
